The farmhouse library and parlor are
dedicated to leisure. The library
is a quiet retreat with floor-to-ceiling bookcases and excellent armchairs.
It’s also home to an 1878 Steinway square grand piano, newly restored,
with a rosewood case and muscular (voluptuous?) legs.
The largest of the three fireplaces is here in the library,
amid the dark wood and wallpaper riches.
The parlor is a bright open room with
honey-colored beadboard paneling and a plush purple sofa that looks like
it might have inhabited a Fred Astaire movie. The cushy linen couch
opposite is an invitation to sink in and soak up the sunlight in the late afternoon. If you’re so inclined,
take advantage of the public computer on the desk in the corner to
check your email or reconnect with the web.
The downstairs hallway is an Arts and Crafts moment
rendered with historic wallpaper and vintage lighting. The
hallway leads to a small, pleasant space with a boatload of games, from cards and scrabble
to elaborate strategy board games. The round walnut table here is a convivial spot to pursue them.
The cream-colored walls of the dining room are
punctuated with two sets of French doors and a pair of windows that look
out toward Emigrant Lake. The 10-foot farm table and cushioned chairs
make breakfast an easy-going experience. The back deck and wrap-around
porches invite you towards the outdoors, with a further set of pleasures.
